There’s danger lurking in your bathroom, and no it’s not the toilet, it’s the toxic chemicals in your everyday beauty and skincare products. If you’ve been considering detoxing your life of toxic everything (people included), a good place to start is to look at the things that you come into contact with the most in your daily life and start the cull from there. Skin is our largest organ, and whatever we put on it absorbs skin deep, into our system.
So it's time to toss out the toxic waste from your life like last Saturday’s pizza takeout still sitting inside your fridge. It’s time to call bullshit on what’s acceptable to be sold as skin “care”, and make a stand against beauty corporations that charge top dollar for toxic chemical fillers. And what better way to do this than speaking with your dollar dollar bills ya’ll. So let’s look at some of the most toxic chemicals that has no place on our bodies.
Formaldehyde
This is on the top of our axis of evil chemical list that has no place in any skincare products. Unfortunately nearly one in five personal care products contain this toxic waste. Formaldehyde can be found in hair care products, adhesives and nail polish. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), formaldehyde is a carcinogenic chemical associated with the onset of various forms of cancer. This is a chemical used in building materials, and has no place on a babe.
Oxybenzone
Oxybenzone or benzophenone-3 is often found in sunscreen products. The Skin Deep Cosmetic Database states that oxybenzone is linked to irritation and allergies, as well as be a hormone disruptor. Nasty stuff.
Triclosan
This is a super potent antibacterial typically used in everything from hand soap to toothpaste. Triclosan is potentially contaminated with chloroform and dioxins which is linked to organ toxicity, allergic reaction, skin, eye, and lung irritation. It can also make our hormones go haywire. Like we need anymore of that right ladies?
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used widely in skincare and cosmetics. The CDC has detected parabens in virtually all Americans bodies. The chemical is linked to breast cancer cell growth in women and lower testosterone levels and sperm count in men. Nuff said.
Fragrance/Parfum
Sounds innocent, smells nice. All good right? Not quite. Some people say that what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but in this case, it would. There are tons of chemicals hidden behind the words fragrance/parfum, in fact, recent research from EWG and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found an average of 14 different chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products, all of them hidden from the label. Fragrances can contain hormone disruptors and are among the top 5 allergens in the world. Your safest bet is to buy fragrance free whenever possible.
